Comic Book Review: Transformers vs. G.I. JOE #5

Transformers vs. G.I. JOE #5 escalates the conflict between Decepticons and Cobra against the fragile alliance formed between the JOEs and the Autobots. There is a lot of twists and turns and a ton of complexity and Easter eggs for multiple read throughs, but is it good?

Tom Scioli’s artwork is once again top notch with its old school nostalgia; it really is the only thing on the shelf that has this unique look. His coloring is very bright and has a ton of colors on each and every page whether it is the yellow and red from gun blasts to the green of the JOEs uniforms and vehicles. Scioli’s panel choices are also extremely unique and varied. On one page he uses hexagonal panels cutting through the middle of the page adding a psychedelic effect to coincide with the mind trip taking place and being portrayed on the page. My favorite panel layout of the entire book breaks down Fortress Maximus into multiple boxes each displaying different action sequences taking place within him.

Comic Book Review: Transformers vs. G.I. JOE #4

Transformers vs. G.I. JOE #4 is full of surprises and revelations and the continued introduction of more and more players as the conflict rages on. Is it good?

Tom Scioli and John Barber pull a fast one right from the first page creating a chaotic and action-packed event which leads to an interesting look into Snake Eyes as he fights the demons within himself as well as Duke! Tom Scioli’s artwork portraying the inner battle within Snake Eyes is intriguing as the first image depicts him meditating and remembering voices from his past as both tell a different method of achieving a goal. On the subsequent page he illustrates a picture of Snake Eyes with Duke and Scarlett torn straight down the middle cutting Snake Eyes in half. In just two short pages, Scioli is able to illustrate and characterize Snake Eyes as a conflicted individual with a brewing internal struggle.

Review: Transformers vs. G.I. JOE #2

The Joes have fended off the first incursion of Earth by the Decepticons and have launched their own invasion of Cybertron. The Joes, led by Scarlett and her Star Brigade are relentlessly carpet bombing Cybertron with Green Bombs until they run into Trypticon and the Decepticons.

Will the Joes be able to survive against the “Giant Homicidal Robots?” More importantly, is it good?
